Copper Round Bar

Copper has a chemical element called Cu and atomic number 29. Copper is a reddish metal with face-centred cubic crystalline structure. It is malleable, ductile and extremely good conductor of both heat and electricity. It is softer than zinc and can be polished to a bright finish. It is found in a periodic table, together with silver and gold. It has a low chemical reactivity. It forms a greenish surface film called patina in a moist air. This coating protects the metal from further attack.

Types of Copper Alloy

  1. Brass – it is formed out of copper mixed with 45% zinc. The strength of the alloy increases when zinc component is extra. There are three types of copper alloy. They are copper zinc alloy, copper zinc tin alloy and copper zinc lead alloy.
  2. Bronze – bronze is one brazing alloy of copper and also one of the phosphorous elements are aluminium, nickel, magnesium.
  3. Nickel silvers – it has a very misleading appearance, like silver. They are the mixture of copper with nickel, zinc and sometimes lead.
  4. Copper nickel – copper mixed with nickel is used for pipes, boat sheathing etc.

Identification

  1. Metal magnetism – magnet is very easy to distinguish whether it is a real or a fake copper. Magnets won’t attract to copper. It will attract to steel, iron or steel alloys plated with copper.
  2. Consider colour – real copper has a colour of reddish tint, which can be described as orange or pink.
  3. Clues in corrosion – real copper forms a crust in shades of green and blue.
  4. Filing system – if the filing reveals a different shade of metal, the object is likely copper-plated. Solid objects will be of same colour.
  5. Take a number – small maker’s marks or numbers that are carved can help us to identify if it’s a real copper.
