Cobalt Round Bar

Cobalt is a chemical element with symbol Co and atomic number 27. Like nickel, cobalt is found in the earth’s crust only in chemically combined form. It is found in alloys of natural meteoric iron. The free element produced by reductive smelting, is a hard, lustrous, silver grey metal.

Uses

  1. It is used to make magnets. It is alloyed with aluminium and nickel to make particularly powerful magnets.
  2. Other alloys of cobalt are used in jet turbine generators, where high-temperature strength is important.
  3. It is used in electroplating because of its attractive appearance, hardness and resistance to corrosion.
  4. It is used in wear-resistant alloys which can be found in orthopaedic and dental implants.

Application

  1. Super alloys such as stellate are the largest consumer of cobalt metal.
  2. Iron, cobalt and nickel contains small amount of other metals which includes chromium, tungsten, aluminium and titanium.
  3. It is used to manufacture turbine blades for jet engines, hard facing machine parts etc.
  4. Hard metals, in which cobalt is used as a binding material. It includes diamond tools.
  5. It is used to produce permanent magnets like magnetic recording media, electric motors as well as generators.
  6. Cobalt chemicals are used in metallic cathodes of rechargeable batteries.
